The Leadership Challenge Facilitator Training
What you can expect to Learn:
  • The research foundation for the Kouzes & Posner Leadership Model (The Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders)
  • Your own leadership behavioral tendencies through a personal Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI)
  • How to explain and interpret the LPI.
  • Workshop agenda and processes for the 2 and 3 day The Leadership Challenge® Workshop.
  • Experiential activities that illustrate the practices and make them come alive.
  • How to conduct a powerful The Leadership Challenge® Workshop in your organization.
What you will do:
  • Complete a Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) and receive 360-degree feedback (if you have not already completed the inventory).
  • Practice facilitating at least one module of the workshop and receive feedback from highly experienced facilitators.
  • Observe key workshop modules presented and participate in feedback and discussion.
  • Practice debriefing experiential activities.
  • View and discuss suggested videos.
What you will take away:
  • An in depth knowledge and understanding of the Kouzes & Posner leadership model (The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®)
  • All the elements of a successful leadership development intervention with guidelines for customization
  • Certificate of achievement as a Leadership Challenge® Workshop Facilitator.
Facilitator Training Pre-work

Participants will be expected to complete certain pre-work assignments in preparation for their facilitator training.  Although the assignments will be specified in more detail after registration, they will likely include items like:

  • Readings from Kouzes and Posner's book, The Leadership Challenge
  • Preparation for delivering a specific module from the workshop
  • Recent attendance at The Leadership Challenge Workshop®
  • Identification of a visible workplace or public example of one of the Five Practices

All participants will also be expected to reflect on and identify the areas on which they most need to concentrate, in order to become the best workshop facilitator they can be.

Facilitator Training Agenda

Day One: This will be an interactive discussion, with Q & A on specific participant issues.

  • Welcome
  • Discuss Program and Participant Objectives Program Context:
  • History/Background/Proof of Value
    • Key Lessons about the Five Practices
    • Determine Strategic Gaps
  • Develop Personal Learning Platforms
  • Development of Stakeholder Strategy
  • Review of Debriefing experiential activities
  • Conduct Activity and practice debriefing (Helium Stick)

Day Two: Each facilitator will have the opportunity to deliver a key module from the program. Anticipate 20 minute sessions followed by 25 minutes of feedback and additional discussion/Q&A of module.

  • Review TLCW Program Agenda Facilitator Practice Sessions
    • Set up process
    • Conduct practices sessions
    • Provide strategic feedback
    • Conduct practice sessions
    • Provide strategic feedback
  • Discussion of key points/videos related to any module not practiced.
  • Final Preparation
    • Q&A on issues related to conducting a program (might include items like pre-work, awards table, timing issues, etc.)
    • Continuing support process from master facilitators
  • Close of session

Key Modules For Practice (Specific modules will be assigned in Facilitator Training Pre Work)

  • Program kickoff/orienteering
  • 5 Practices Overview (2 people)
  • LPI
  • MTW - Introduction, Characteristics/Credibility
  • ISV - Introduction, 5 attributes of vision, set up visioning exercise
  • CTP - Introduction, video review and debrief, set up "up to the challenge”
  • EOA - Introduction, Powerful/Powerless Exercise (conduct and debrief)
  • ETH - Introduction, Most Meaningful Recognition exercise (conduct and debrief)
  • Experiential Activity - Set up and debrief

With smaller groups, a couple of the above modules may be discussed as a group vs. individually facilitated.
