Our leadership curriculum is based on a research analyzing data instrument and case data collected from over 25,000 leaders and 100,000 constituents in a variety of private and public sector organizations. This research identifies the five practices that characterize leaders who get extraordinary things done in organizations. Individuals who increase the frequency of these five leadership practices have been proven to have higher credibility and higher performing teams. Through this work it has been proven that leadership is learnable, and that individuals who experience our programs do in fact increase their leadership effectiveness.
Managers apply the practices of leadership through video cases, workbook exercises, interactive activities, group problem solving and simulated experiential learning. TLCW includes the leading industry 360-degree assessment tool, The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI). The LPI is a highly refined behavioral based 360 degree survey instrument which collects data on the frequency with which one exhibits 30 leadership behaviors. These leadership behaviors have emerged from research begun by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner in 1983, and form the core of our approach to leadership skills development. Participants receive valid and reliable feedback on how others perceive them as leaders. Prior to the workshop, each participant and up to 10 colleagues, completes the LPI and the resulting report is shared with the participant in the workshop. The reliability and validity of this instrument is continually confirmed by the doctoral theses based on it- over 100 have been written to date.
Overview of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®
Leaders model the way. Leaders have strong beliefs about matters of principle. To be able to clearly articulate their beliefs, leaders find their voice by clarifying personal values. But clarity is not enough. To be credible, leaders do what they say they will do. They set the example by aligning actions with shared values.
Leaders inspire a shared vision. They look across the horizon of time and envision an ennobling and uplifting future. Leaders are positive, they bring the future to life, and they enlist others in a common cause.
Leaders challenge the process. They are pioneers, willing to step out and change the way things are. They experiment and take risks and learn from the accompanying mistakes.
Leaders enable others to act. They know they cannot do it alone, so they foster collaboration and strengthen others. By actively involve people in planning and decision-making, and through daily acts of trust and respect leaders increase the competence and confidence of their constituents.
Leaders encourage the heart. The climb to the top is arduous and steep, and because leaders ask constituents to carry out difficult tasks, they recognize and reward individuals along the way, and they celebrate the achievement of milestones. Genuine acts of caring draw people forward.
